We are Laura and Joe, a Cumbrian couple who love being active and getting out into nature. Whilst living in Wānaka, New Zealand, we immersed ourself into the lifestyle that prioritised adventure and would fondly refer to the place as β€œone big playground”.

It was during a winter season in Wānaka that I (Laura) first came across mobile saunas. I was already into wild swimming, and loved the mental challenge of the cold immersion but secretly hated not being able to warm up again afterwards. So when I was invited to try a wood-fired sauna on the lake shore after a day of skiing, I was completely blown away and the idea of building one for the Lake District was planted. We have been working hard to create our little sauna on wheels over the summer and love being able to share it with locals and visitors to the Lakes alike.

I find that when the water is chilly enough to take your breath away, and you really have to slow your breathing down, I feel so present and in the moment. It really is special. One of the reasons I don’t offer shorter sessions is because I really hope people can enjoy the slowness and stillness of the sauna rounds, dipping in and out of the cold and the heat. Fellside Sauna - the progression from a big white box trailer to a tranquil spa experience πŸ§–‍♀️ Inspired by the saunas that popped up on the shores of Wānaka and Hawea while we lived in the Lakes District of New Zealand, we felt drawn to bringing this experience to our very own Lake District. The trailer had been destined to be a mobile workshop for my partner and his father but remained unused and so I jumped at the generous offer to use it. Lots of thought went into the design to make the most of lake views, the height of the benches is mindful of an authentic Finnish experience where bathers sit above the heat source to make the most of the "löyly" (steam produced from pouring water onto hot stones). I had a wonderful team of help with my partner and parents. I feel incredibly grateful and still in a bit of shock that we managed to create this. I cannot wait for you to try it :)
